IBA Recycling
IBA Recycling refers to the process of recovering and reusing materials from Incinerator Bottom Ash (IBA), the non-combustible residue left after waste is incinerated in Energy-from-Waste (EfW) facilities. Instead of being sent to landfill, IBA is processed to extract valuable metals and produce sustainable aggregates.
This recycling process conserves natural resources, reduces carbon emissions, and supports a circular economy by turning waste into a valuable resource. Johnson’s leads this sector by combining environmental responsibility with industrial innovation.
As the Energy from Waste sector developed, we recognised the need for a solution to its Incinerator Bottom Ash (IBA) residue. We designed a facility to segregate the metal for use in manufacture and the remaining ash we blend with aggregates to provide a sustainable, lower cost and higher quality product.
IBA Recycling
With municipal waste volumes increasing the waste to energy sector play a pivotal role in the UK’s waste management strategy, moving waste up the hierarchy by diverting it from landfill and generating energy that is released as steam and electricity.
At Johnsons, we partner with energy from waste companies supporting them with the sustainability by offering fully recovered solutions to their residues by segregating the metal and mineral fractions.
By giving the metals and minerals a second life, we provide a resource efficient solution that reduces the requirement for mining primary products and its associated negative environmental impacts.
The circularity of IBA
Waste Generation - Improving the sustainability of the waste sector is key to reducing emissions and increasing the circularity of resources
Energy-from-waste - Incinerating waste generates electricity. As a byproduct, a quarter of the initial volume is transformed into incinerator bottom ash (IBA)
IBA Processing - Johnsons process the IBA and extracts valuable ferrous and non-ferrous metals, as well as cleaning up the mineral fraction
Metal Refinery - Extracted metals are sent to refineries to produce a high-purity metal product which is suitable for reuse in a range of different applications
IBA Aggregates - Johnsons transform IBA minerals into manufactured aggregates - which can be used in civil construction works as a replacement for virgin material
Market Economy - Processed material re-enters the market as new products. This reduces the need for mining and promotes a circular economy
I have great confidence that Johnsons Aggregates will be an important partner, moving forward, in ensuring Rivenhall's success
