Project Overview

DHL Cargo Hub Expansion

DHL invested £90 million into expanding its European air freight hub at East Midlands Airport.

We supplied over 30,000 tonnes of recycled 6F2 capping material for use underneath the new warehouse and car park facilities. This provided a cost-effective alternative to primary aggregates providing a cost saving of over 40%. Using the same vehicles, we also took away 400 loads of recyclable hardcore reducing vehicle movements in and out of site.

Solution & Benefit

We were able to provide a one-stop solution for several services which reduced the supply chain risk. The evolving demands of the project meant that our flexible approach was maximised and we could react quickly to operational changes. This was done on time and budget with no safety or environmental issues.

Key benefits were:

  • One point of contact to arrange all operations
  • Quick reaction to short notice requests across many product and service lines
  • Reduced vehicle movements as all vehicles were backloaded to our recycling centre
  • We provided recycling of muck away as well as recycled materials
  • 40% cost saving when compared to alternative methods
  • Significant CO2 reduction through using recycled materials rather than virgin aggregates and minimising our haulage requirements
